Week beginning Monday, 4th June

Postby Geoffm » Sun Jun 03, 2018 7:27 pm

Another week of easterlies. It's been a long run this year, with westerlies very rare. Basically, if you are happy with light winds and just launching into thermals, Corndon is a great XC site. If you want ridge soaring, Corndon needs a good breeze to work. Alternatives to the south are Pandy and the Malverns, and to the north Mam Tor/Treak Cliff in the Peaks. All those sites are better for light wind ridge soaring. Corndon, though, does take a wide range of directions, from north, all the way through to SE.

Some of the days should be good XC days, as well as ridge soarable.

Monday: ENE, reasonable strength, Corndon should work.

Tuesday: NE, again Corndon.

Wednesday: NNE/NE, winds starting to drop a bit. Peaks a better bet, or maybe Pandy.

Thursday: ENE, slightly stronger. Corndon possibly.

Friday: NNE/NE. Not sure of site, depends on the strength.

Weekend: still NE. Sunny.

Tuesday looked quite nice later on - did anyone fly Corndon?

Wednesday similar direction and hopefully even better air, but is due to be lower winds, certainly not soarable at Corndon in a NE, but just might be enough to tempt thermals up the face. Other than that I can't think of anywhere else really unless there's a bit more east in it for Malverns or Penyc. For those going XC, the air is due to be drier with higher base going to blue in mid to west Wales.

Thursday shaping up to be similar to Wednesday, but might be a bit more east in it, so Corndon, Penyc or Malverns might soar better. Not a decent XC day as cloudbase/inversion not great again, but you never know it might change as today was windier than anticipated, I heard that Malverns were blown out for a while.

Forecasts for Thursday have improved a little since last night, but also windier, so might be blown out, Corndon copes better than other easterlies though.

Thursday was looking promising during the morning, with some nice shallow cumulus forming, but then it went all overcast and dismal. Haven't heard if anyone flew.
Friday around here does not look great as the occluded front is in evidence. Up north - Yorkshire Dales and so on look good.

Saturday and Sunday looking fairly good - still NE wind though, pity we don't have a site facing that direction for ridge soaring.

Sunday in many ways looks like being the best forecast this week, but it could well be too light to ridge soar. However the inversion level is expected to get up to 5000ft or so and there might be some cumulus. Winds are very light but most give them as east. Best air is in Wales and better in north. My suggestions are snowdonia, but beware it will sea breeze and kill things early in the valleys. Penycloddiau east might be ok or pandy. Malverns are on the edge of the best air, but at least its a long ridge. Corndon can be very fraught in light winds, however earlier this week corndon was quite windy despite forecast winds not much more than today.
