Week Beginning Monday 13th January

Postby Dave Thomas » Sat Jan 11, 2020 5:19 pm

Sadly the whole of next week looks blown out or raining. Of course if things improve, we'll update asap.

Looking on the bright side, people flew in thermals yesterday (Friday) at the Mynd, I don't think anyone got very high, but they were there and lots of flying was done by many. It can only get better from now on - apart from next week !

Friday onwards is looking much better now, there's a pretty good chance of at least one flyable day over the weekend - probably westerly or SW.

Missed a bit of wing suit flying today at Clatter - wind bang on the hill and 72mph - is that soarable?

Weekend looking good - probably too wet on Friday though.
Saturday quite a good lapse rate chart - cloudbase or blue 3000ft plus winds about right speed and NW.
Sunday probably NW again and lighter winds and decreasing inversion level. so maybe not as good.
Some forecasts have the winds a lot more West than NW, so will update again closer to the weekend.

Monday even less good but still sunny.

Actually for Friday, BBC on TV are now saying the rain will have passed pretty quickly though BBC online says not. RASP is indicated a really nice lapse rate with cloudbase up to 4000ft and no towering cumulus as predicted elsewhere. However the wind is due to be pretty well west so the only place is likely to be the Mynd and too windy for PG's but might be ok for HG's to launch ok. Maybe coastal flying an option, pen dinas or somewhere fairly low at the coast?

Today, Saturday looks nicely flyable though there is the chance the wind might not be strong enough all the time, with winds west, veering NW then maybe going West again, so the Mynd is likely to be on at some stage. Cloudbase where there is any cloud about 3-3500 ft. Winds are much lighter in south Wales and much stronger in the Peaks, so we are probably in the best place.

Sunday slightly light winds and not as good lapse rate so less likely to be thermic at all or ridge soarable.

Loads flew for ages yesterday at the Mynd, virtually all day, I think from reports I've heard it was pretty much the best place to be in t he UK, though flying was had in many other places generally not as good and reliable.

Sunday is as expected really light winds at present and due to be low all day, west going SW, with a low level inversion so the best chance will be to go to a really high hill of which we don't have any round here.
