Week beginning Monday 19th August

Postby Dave Thomas » Sun Aug 18, 2019 10:57 pm

Monday looks borderline blown out at present with gusty winds from the south West. If anywhere the Avon or Thames valley club sites look lighter winds and more westerly. Chance of some nasty showers, but not everywhere, more chance of missing them.

Tuesday onwards seems to me calming down and less chance of cunims and rain by then,. but still a broadly SW airflow.
Friday onwards winds reducing and backng, cloudy but dry.

Today, Tuesday has RASP being more optimistic than other forecasts about the wind speed. All forecasts have it pretty well smack on west and dry and thermi with a decent cloudbasec but the best air further east than our area. Mynd looks good for HG and just might be ok for PG in the day. Late evening it is due to calm down but might go off to the south a bit too far for easy ridge soaring at the Mynd.
Elsewhere, due to the wind speed and direction there are no really certain locations for PG's to launch and fly, though HG's are going to Frocester.

Wednesday in our air area borderline blown out SW winds. Much better air and lower wind speeds in south east England where it looks like being a good ridge and XC day.

Friday sees winds in our area much lighter than the last few days, and broadly SW or SSW, not a great XC forecast here but could well be a reasonable ridge soaring day Clatter if it's SW but if it's pretty well South then Camlo, but if it's in between Camlo might be an issue as the SSW facing part of the bowl is very shallow and not suited to really light winds.

Elsewhere in England the thermic conditions and lapse rate charts look a lot better but much more southerly direction so site choice is very limited, blue down south but more cumulus cloudy above the M4.

Over the weekend the conditions are due to become more stable thermically, so a wind is going to be needed for most people to ridge soar which you may well get with winds increasing from the South East. So could be good for ridge soaring but pretty hopeless for anyone wanting to thermal at height.

Saturday has light to moderate SSE winds veering to south as the day progresses with winds aloft reducing very slightly. As with most heavily inverted days going out late is likely to be far better as the ground and low level air warms up. Slightly windier in Wales, so Wrekin looks obvious choice or maybe gyrn lower takeoff. Corndon south face but its not the best for ridge soaring and being fairly high is closer to inversion level.
