Week beginning Monday 1st August

Postby Dave Thomas » Mon Aug 01, 2022 6:55 am

Monday is due to quickly back SW and be nice air and soarable but gradually increasing. Late evening a warm front will bring heavy cloud and xhance of drizzle. Options I think will be clatter or shepherds tump lunchtime ish. Good xc conditions too.

Blown out until Thursday which then starts a very long run of good weather which at present looks good for flying every day for over a week. Of course I wil be away without a wing or any Internet so unlikely to be able to check the weather during that period.

Big differences between various forecasts for Thursday and Friday, some say both days probably blown out for PG around here, but ok for HG. wind direction NW. Others say Thursday lighter and WNW with Friday also lighter and NW. both days have good air and high cloudbase.
Weekend looking nice too but light winds

Forecasts same as before. Soarable very early on at the mynd today but going NW and getting stronger. What varies between forecasts is the strength as some say pg blown out others say OK. Due to be lighter winds in Wales so maybe llandinam though bigger might be better than say the wrekin where it is due to be windiest. Long mountain probably good option apart from the thistles which are bad enough to put most people off. Excellent thermic air.
Friday broadly similar but slightly less windy.
Weekend lighter still and west on Saturday

Friday similar to Thursday and some forecasts say windier. Difficult direction as probably too much west in it for long mountain and too windy on the mynd for PG but should be OK for HG I think.

Weekend both days light west and good air. May not always be soarable speeds but more suited to most pilots than today's windy conditions

Saturday has light west winds that should become sosrable speeds later. Probably a mostly blue cloudless day at the mynd but further west should have cumulus. Interestingly the wind is actually due to decrease with height towards the inversion level which is due to be around 4500ft.

That particular image comes from the gliding club camera inside the cafe so isn't our responsibility. Looks to be fixed, I think they have to reboot their computer every time.
Sunday looks much like yesterday which saw numerous massive xc flights in various directions and goals. However today the inversion is due to be slightly lower and forecasts vary on wind strength between better than yesterday and slightly less. But it still looks like the mynd is the place in our area.
