Ext request - Urgent Appeal to buy land in Church Stretton

Postby Crawford Coulson » Tue Oct 11, 2022 8:34 am

Dear Long Mynd Soaring Club

We are currently asking for pledges to help buy the fields adjacent to Coppice Leasowes and have currently received in the region of £300,000, an incredible response. We just need to raise a bit more in order to be able to submit a bid that might succeed, so if your organisation would like to support this campaign, please do so now. We have to receive your pledge by 10am on Wednesday morning at the latest. Full detail are in the attached PDF.
With grateful thanks
Sandra and Peter Whitlock

Leasowes Meadows - Urgent Appeal to buy land in Church Stretton for future generations and for wildlife – can you help?

We have recently found out that three fields adjacent to Coppice Leasowes Nature
Reserve are being offered for sale NOW and bids must be submitted by October
12th. Please help! Full details can be seen in the sale brochure (please click link or
copy and paste into your browser). ... 0_4952.pdf
We invite you to support this campaign to secure the land for nature and for people.
Despite the guide price being £280,000 we know that the landowner has already
received bids far in excess of this. Never the less we feel that it is worth trying to
secure these fields for the future and indeed a major donor has already pledged
We anticipate that we will need to raise £400,000.and we have only a few days
to gather enough pledges to be able to make a bid for the fields. Please don’t
delay - email your pledge today, stating how much money you could donate,
together with your name and telephone number, to:
If this appeal is successful, the land will be purchased through the Middle Marches
Community Land Trust (MMCLT), who also own Cudwell Meadow (see website
These fields are an amenity for the people of Church Stretton. They are also a haven
for wildlife as they link into the existing network for nature in and around the town,
being adjacent to the woodland of Coppice Leasowes. At present the grassland is
moderately species-rich, with great prospects for managing as a hay meadow with
some areas given over to scrub/woodland and tree planting. At a time when our
wildlife has never been more threatened by climate change and development, this
area could be managed as a ‘stepping stone’ for nature, which would increase the
habitat for birds and butterflies and reduce the risks faced by isolated wildlife
Who is organising this? Sandra and Peter Whitlock, residents of Church Stretton,
who help manage and conserve Cudwell Meadow, in conjunction with MMCLT. The
Town Council, the Mayor and the National Trust have all been advised.
Who are the Middle Marches Community Land Trust (MMCLT)? The Trust is
recognised by HMRC as a charity for tax purposes and is able to claim Gift Aid.
When will I have to pay the money I pledge?. If our bid is successful, we will ask
you to make your payment to MMCLT within FOUR WEEKS (by 10th November).
Can I change my mind after I pledge? Yes, you can - but please don’t! If it
succeeds we will need all the money that is pledged.
What if the bid is unsuccessful? You will not be asked for any money.
Who will manage the land
A committee will be formed, chaired by Middle Marches Community Land Trust and
including Sandra and Peter Whitlock, other stakeholders who express an interest
and others with meadow management experience. The ‘Stepping Stones’ team of
the National Trust will help with some of the practical activities.
What happens if more money is pledged than is needed? We will only take
money for the purchase costs, legal fees, fund-raising costs & any work that might
be needed immediately. If more should be pledged than we need, we will only ask
donors for a reduced pro-rata amount.
Is the information I give you secure and private? All information will be kept
securely, will not be shared with others and will not be used for any other purpose.
Any further queries? Please call Sandra on 07810 521559
