webcam refresh rate

Postby David Broughton » Fri Nov 05, 2021 11:35 am

Would it be a big deal to up the refresh rate from 20 mins to (say) 10 mins? I think the Llangollen cam refreshes every 5 mins.
(and what happened re the time lapse & zoom options?)

Dave very sorry, but in fact I have just today had to redcue the refresh rate of the southern camera to 20 minutes as it ran out of data 4 days before the end of the monthly billing cycle. This now matches the northern camera. I have in fact already been in diswcussion with the4 chair about searching for alternative contracts other than O2 which will give us more data at a lower or simialr cost. Each camera is costing our membership £6 per month already. I will be very happy if you can take on a search for a auto renewable contract with 2Gb per month with a SIM card that works on the Mynd. O2 two years ago was by far the best deal then, and it takes a lot of effort to trawl through all the fine details on contracts and suitability.

The time lapse and zoom is still there - just clock on the link it tells you to.

This from N Wales sites officer:

Tesco Mobile, £15/month, 8GB as far as I recall. I believe that it’s actually the battery/solar panel that is the limiting factor on refresh rate, rather than our data.

That's a huge cost they are paying each month, and they have an older version of the camera which is not as powerful. we have also gone for the double sized solar panel, so none of that is relevent to us - except maybe in deepest winter with very low sun levels. but not an issue at all last year when we did have a higher refresh rate. The original contract with O2 gave us an extra 1Gb per month free, but that expired, so we're down to 0.5Gb. Hence my ask for a search for an alternative, but we don't want to pay more than we already are - better to be less if possible.

Thanks to club members, I've now got a couple of options to investigate for more data allowance.

Also separately as of yesterday I'm trialling a Three SIM card which may be of use in the Long Mynd Holfuy weather station to reduce the monthly charges on that one. Need to leave it a month or two to check the allowance doesn't vanish (I don't trust these free offers), but if it works will cancel the O2 contract on that one and swap the SIM card .

Regarding the Long Mynd Holfuy weather station and reducing the monthly charges as it only uses a tiny bit of data each month. the Three SIM card did not work - it only runs on 3g and 4G and the Holfuy needs 2G. So that was a dead duck, but I'm now trialling a GiffGaff SIM in another 2G device, which is working ok and runs off the same O2 network as existing O2 contracted SIM card, so all being well the O2 contract can be terminated if it's still working ok in a few days. We then need to work on sorting the SolarCams to be either cheaper which is unlikely, or more data to give the opportunity for more frequent pictures and or better quality larger image file sizes
