Long Mynd bottom landing field

Postby chris depinna » Sat Dec 19, 2020 9:23 pm

ALERT:::::::::::::::ALERT

Bottom Landing Field - PLEASE READ

The bottom landing field is now under ownership of the National Trust.
The good news is that they have issued us with a License to continue to use the field subject to the following conditions;
1. The field must only be used for Emergency Landings.
Pilots are requested to avoid planned top to bottom flights and to side land if unable to top land.

2. The field is out of bounds to us during the months of May, June & July.
The NT purchased the field specifically to create a meadow to grow different varieties of flora to harvest & export the seedlings to other baron land they own, and also to attract varying species of fauna. Their scientist advised these 3 months are critical to achieve this objective.

3. The licence will be reviewed for renewal on an annual basis subject to our compliance of these conditions.
The field is now included on the NT warden’s patrol schedule and they are likely to be active in the area on flying days to monitor our usage of the btm field and to observe the extent of our impact to the flora & fauna.

Kind Regards LMSC Committee

Dear Committee

Could you clarify please whether the NT now own fields PG 1-3 shown in the site guide and whether they are all affected by these conditions?

If they are then that’s going to make things tricky for the club especially between May and July?

Roy

Just to add to the top statement- Although this agreement is not perfect it is a starting point to build on a relationship with the NT and their new use of the field. A few years back when the land was for sale we were told the new owners would use the field to keep horses in and there would be no way we would be able to use it. Therefore this agreement is a far better outcome for us, for the fee payable we can now outline it on the site guide as an emergency landing field in the designated months. Maybe in time if we abide by the agreement it could be improved on.

Roy, I will let Kevin answer your question about PG 1-3.

Many Thanks,

Rich.

Rich

Thanks for the reply, understood that this is a challenging task.

One look at the DEFRA Magic Map highlights how the countryside is being carved up, categorised and managed. I didn’t realise but even our take off is part of the Mynd SSSI.

The landing fields P2 & P3 as previously shown on the site map are no longer official landing fields. They are being removed from the site map. Both fields were sold when P1 field was sold. Unfortunately P2 field was sold to the purchases of Fir Tree farm who are horse people and is out of bounds to us. P3 field is believed also to belong to Fir Tree farm but we’re not 100% certain of this. I have attempted to contact the new owners twice now to confirm this and are still awaiting their response to my voice messages.
Unfortunately most of the suitable fields for btm landing are increasingly being used for horses so it’s proving extremely difficult to resolve.
