week beginning Wednesday 2nd December

Postby Dave Thomas » Wed Dec 02, 2020 8:36 am

Today should be on at the Long Mynd, but probably not until at least lunchtime, low cloud and possibly drizzle before then, but looks ok for the afternoon - between WNW and NW and soarable speeds.

Too slushy Thursday, possible chance on Friday, but might be a bit strong for PG's

Friday now looks like far too likely to be wet and slightly on the windy side, though it might well be West. Saturday has NE winds with a strong wind gradient, temperature inversion and variation with height up to cloudbase at about 2000ft, but just might be flyable, though Corndon isn't really a good direction to ridge soar if it's like that. Sunday has winds being shown on forecasts anywhere between light west to North, maybe too light to soar, but marginally better lapse charts than Saturday so looks like the best chance really.

So far every forecast I look at covering the next few days, looks like I'm looking at a different week to the previous, so no real idea which to believe at present. Those of us who fly in the winter are all pretty desperate to get out I'm sure, but this is difficult to call.

Saturday afternoon looks like being NE to NNE and fairly breezy, though Corndon might be ok as it does cope with a decent wind in that direction but it's not really ideal soaring direction. Lapse charts suggest likely to be clear of cloud, though that's not entirely 100%

Sunday shows lots of cloud and the charts say at about hilltop height though the mynd is clear at present. Winds quite locally varied, from west to north and from zero to soarable. If nothing better to do might be worth trying though there's a good chance of ending up with a wet wing.
