Week beginning Monday 31st August

Postby Dave Thomas » Sun Aug 30, 2020 10:03 pm

Monday has what appears to be a narrow strip of good air without too much cloud cover enabling decent thermals. This being important as the wind from somewhere between SE and SSW is due to be very light so not ridge soarable. In our area The Wrekin looks the most likely, but Corndon south side can work and has the slight advantage for me as a quick bomb out isnt too big a walk back up, though you have to be careful landingamongst the boulders. The south face of Camlo is pretty steep and could also be in decent air, the air isnt bad as such just quite a lot of cloud spreadaout likely to block the heat. Oh and some lapse charts suggest Wales might go SW or even light west so who knows maybe even Clatter?

Monday still looks about the same, maybe more chance of a SW wind towards north Wales.

Tuesday not looking particularly exciting but the light wind might be on the Mynd.

Tuesday looks broadly similar to Monday, Light S, possibly going SW with a lot of spreadout obscuring the sun, but thermic nonetheless. possibly less spreadout in south Wales for Brecon beacons, but around here it's just one of those light wind sunny side high up try to thermal days again. None of our sites are particularly ideal for that, but we're in better air than the peak district. Maybe top launch of the Gyrn or a Snowdonia site, but sea breeze may affect them?

Wednesday SW and much stronger, possibly too much for PG's

Tuesday didn't turn out very good in Wales from what I hear, no wind anywhere, yet there was wind and thermals further south east, which was not forecast to be as good.

Wednesday is already breezy and the front is coming in fast so don't think it's worth trying anywhere here today. Friday looks a possibility for SW sites, and the weekend too with a veering wind, though not very thermic.

Friday now has the wind more WSW than proper SW but it is reasonably windy for PG's to try the Mynd though it could well be ok to launch some of the time, much better for HG's though and a lot of cloud but a moderate cloudbase to fly the hill. For PG's if the Mynd does get windy, Camlo could be a good option as that part of the slope on the hill is shallower and you can launch lower down.

Saturday more West, but again could be too windy for PG's some of the time.

Saturday still westerly but probably too windy at times for PGs.
Sunday rather confused picture, much lighter westerly winds, but something odd going on in the welsh border area. Not sure but i think it might be the decaying occluded front.

Sunday not looking good in our area by rasp, but other forecasts are not so pessimistic showing westerly winds all day but showers in the middle. Rasp shows no wind or most orher directions and the low cloud lingering all day at the mynd. More wind at llandinam but still low cloud maybe camlo just might be ok. Mynd should be ok first thing this morning.
