Week beginning Monday 13th July

Postby Dave Thomas » Sun Jul 12, 2020 11:38 pm

My Sunday prediction came good, though I myself was literally about to pack up and go home as the southerly wind stubbornly remained at the Mynd until quite late on in the afternoon preventing virtually everyone from launching. Everyone did eventually get up as the wind did get a bit less fiesty and more on the hill, with base over the Mynd nearer 7000ft than 6000 - not sure as didn't get much over 6 but was still a long way short of the cloud.

Well Surprisingly the next week looks to be basically westerly and flyable at many times during the week.
Monday is post occluded frontal but could well be flyable on SW sites - bear in mind that at present as Geoff pointed out Clatter is still closed.

After that it's dry and westerly sometimes too strong but promising. Updates in due course.

Monday late evening might be on and dry at the Mynd. Probably a bit on the damp and windy side during the day anyway.

Tuesday will probably be too windy for most and only possible at long Mountain if it's NW direction, though it may well be more WNW. whether HG's will find it ok at the Mynd I'm not sure of either as it could be too windy or off to the NW a bit much. Possibly less windy further south out of our area, but not all forecasts agree on that, but they do agree on it being NW down there. Cloudbase reasonable at 3500ft plus.

Tuesday has not been as windy as forecast, too light really at Long Mountain and PG's flying Long Mynd ok, though not as good looking sky as was suggested by some forecasts.
Wednesday, fairly low cloudbase but Westerly wind and might be a bit strong on the Mynd or might be just right. Certainly looks promising at present for some ridge soaring during the day.

Cloud is due to clear to well above the Mynd, but it is due to get quiet a bit stringer than it is currently so may not be PG launchable today though it might drop off in late evening. But with a succession of warm front's passing through nothing is likely to be very exciting or dry for very long.

On wednesday HGs flew the mynd.
Today should be an even better day for them but again might be too windy for PGs to launch at the mynd until late on. However some forecasts say much more NW direction so long mountain just might be an alternative option, but do check the weather stations before making that decision as orhers say completely west. Cloudbase a lot better than yesterday and less chance of any drizzle.

Friday due to be much warmer and brighter though a front is heading our way so depending on timing could cloud things over later. The wind is currently SW but due to be wsw to w during the day so should come on the mynd, as long as does not get too strong. So far this week the forecasts have indicated stronger winds that actuals enabling PGs to fly ok. The air further west starts to get tbe frontal air sooner.

Friday did have PGs flying the mynd until it blew out iin the afternoon as the front approached.

Sunday is good air but quite possibly too windy around here, direction nnw, so long mountain is a possibility. However the peak district looks a far better option with much lighter winds and high cloudbase.

The cold front has passed through overnight and conditions will rapidly improve during the day. However it is still the case that it may be too windy for PGs much of the day. Rasp indicates bands of windy air running parallel with the nnw wind direction so in those areas it very likely to be blown out for all. My bet is on long mountain around here, though some forecasts show the wind as being east of north which will make that site very rough. The peak district looks like winds are much lighter up there so that looks more promising.
If you can fly next week the weather is likely to be far better.
