Week Beginning Monday 25th May

Postby Dave Thomas » Mon May 25, 2020 10:00 am

Bank holiday Monday, most forecasts indicate it will never get properly soarable on the Mynd, being far too South all day, though there is a chance it pulls on enough in the afternoon. It will be nicely thermic so as it's the only option of our sites, for the experienced thermalling pilots may be worth it - there are already loads at the hill already.

Tuesday - light to moderate westerly with a low cloudbase. could be some nice ridge soaring hopefully.
Wednesday, If it's north then the Wrekin or Clunbury may be suitable, but not if it goes more NNE as forecast.
Thursday just might go SE enough for Wrekin SE side, alternatively Malverns Kettle Sings site.

Tuesday, West but fairly light until sometime in the afternoon and then due to be NW and a bit stronger. Thermic but not a particularly high cloudbase, but should be perfectly flyable though may be scratchy ridge soarable - it's on the edge forecast wise, just depends how it goes - could be just right, Mynd to start with and then Lawley or Wrekin.

Wednesday, almost everthing says very light winds (except bbc which show nicely windy around here from north) but major differences in direction, which is critical. Might be nnw to north which is ok for lawley and wrekin, but many say east to north east which is no good for our open sites.
The rest of the week is currently expected to be more east or SE and if it does go SE then wrekin may be on.

Thursday, the wind down at the malverns is due to be more easterly than it is at the wrekin where its due to be se or sse. Possibly slightly better air at wrekin with cumulus at 5000 ft.

Friday, broadly similar to Thursday, but probably a little bit windier so could potentially get blown out - better to go later rather than earlier as the inversion will rise so much and allow more air mixing.
Saturday and Sunday, much more easterly and forecasts vary on how windy - ideal for HG's at the Malverns, but could be a bit blowy for PG's much of the time depending on which forecast is right. However the good news is it's much more likely to be cumulus cloudy with base 5000ft plus. Much better to head north up the Pennines on Sunday for PG's to avoid the stronger winds I think, correctly club membered obviously for those locations.

This weekend is still as suggesred yesterday. There has been lots of flying at the malverns this last few days especially for HGs but launchable at times for PGs, so it may be the same today.
