Long Mynd Notice Board - feedback required

Postby kevin williams » Mon Mar 16, 2020 9:52 pm

Today we erected a temporary new notice board. It’s a prototype and aimed at giving members a look at it in order to offer any suggestions for improvement. We’ll leave it there for a month or two and then take all sensible suggestions into consideration and add as necessary to the final version. Please place your suggestions on the forum.
The final version will be professionally displayed in a stainless steel Lectern by the entrance gate in late spring.

Looking at the old boards, apart from the posts rotting, it's obvious that a plywood backing board does not stand up to the weather. I think the signs would be better mounted on a steel sheet (as the gate sign should also have been).

I note that the final version will be in stainless steel. Will it be to clearly show the same detail? The way in which it is set out is excellent.

Thanks for your post Dave.
It’s temporary. Feedback on contents of notice board requested.
Final notice board to be displayed in stainless steel Lectern. Lifetime guarantee.
Gate notice mounted on treated & painted plywood. 10yr guarantee. Very cheap option approx £5 per annum. Metal proved very costly. Committee members will happily replace it when time comes free of charge.
Happy to discuss this or anything else to do with sites at the upcoming AGM in a couple of weeks. I look forward to seeing you there.

Thanks for your post John.
Yes, the printers have told us the final version will be crystal clear and totally sun/weather resistant and last for many years. It’s the same graphics quality that the National Trust uses for their outside notice/ info boards & pictures etc.

Hi Kevin,
Should the negotiations with the National Trust go favourably and the PG bottom landing become available again will the display of its location be accommodated?

Cheers,
Mark.

Thanks for your post Mark.
We’re expecting to hear from the NT very soon regarding the Btm PG landing field. We can only push them so far before they see us as a nusence which we need to avoid. If we are successful retaining it then of course it will be added to the finalised version together with any other sensible suggestions. We will not produce the finalised version until the NT have come back to us one way or another with their decision.

Hi

Late to see this, this may already be covered but my thoughts are:

- There is no mention of a packing away area. Isn’t this vital?

- There is no mention that powered aircraft are prohibited, might be useful

- There is no mention of the recommended spectating area

- I think it would be useful to have an arrow pointing & with words warning that a Model Club operates in that direction

- This type of board is fantastic but with the limitation that it can become out of date very quickly. Is there a means to cheaply/easily make changes? E.g. How would it be communicated that a landing field is temporarily out of bounds? A removable stick on notice/covering? A white board (as the club had before) placed next to this board to indicate important temporary notices (e.g. do not fly / landing field closed)?

- Does the LMSC have an official LoA with the MGC? I’m not aware of one. To my mind that means the Club has to be really careful with the advice and terminology they offer/use in relation to entering and operating within the MGC official gliding airspace especially where it conflicts. If a LoA doesn’t exist, maybe something to look into?

Hope something useful within that.

Cheers, Crawford

and perhaps demarcate the boundaries of the 'no acro' area as this still seems to be an area of confusion?

The new notice board is a draft
Comments have been invited and the merits or otherwise of the incoming suggestions will be assessed by the committee in due course

The new signage
specifically seeks to address a number of issues that we have had previously ,
Namly:
-so many notices that people couldn't be arsed to read
-very poorly displayed and often illegible ,in a notice board full of condensation
- Much too much information presented.
-The old notice board was not optimally placed to encourage review by pilots

-It has been designed to display the most essential and minimum safety information only
-Strip back the complexity of the displayed information
-Make it simple to review and understand, as its orientated correctly
-The site guide clearly is to be consulted to for full and comprehensive information, the sign so states
-And we all like looking at pictures ..don't we!

-we will additionally have a white board

regarding air space :
The Midland gliding club is not restricted air space ,we have a good relationship with them and as a neighbouring airfield, seek to operate in such a way that does not adversely affect their operations, this means observing the height restrictions identified for transiting over their property or their operation will be compromised, their is no requirement for further complexity .

Hi,
The sign so far does look good. But I certainly second that there needs to be a simple marker to indicate where the rigging/de-rigging area is for both hang gliding and paragliding.
Though the hang gliding area seems clearly obvious as you walk through the gate, I feel the paragliding area is less so.
As mentioned, people like pictures and I think this is the best way to draw the attention towards new and visiting pilots and those that are unfamiliar with our site.
