Week beginning Monday, 12th August

Postby Geoffm » Sun Aug 11, 2019 7:57 pm

The start of the week is better than mid week onwwards, when, again, wind and rain are forecast with a succession of fronts coming through - though not as bad as Friday/Saturday. But it is August. And summer seems to be almost over.

Monday: this should be flyable,in terms of wind strength, for both HG and PG, and thermic too. Most forecasts say WNW, though at least one says NNW/NW. So I'll assume that one is wrong, and we'll go with the Mynd tomorrow. Not epic, according to RASP, but worth a trip out, with XCs possible.

Tuesday: again, forecasts slightly differ, this time on strength, but they are consistent on direction, WNW. Certainly ok for hang gliders, possibly top end for PGs, but chances are it'll be ok. Sunny, and again should be thermic.

Wednesday: it starts to go downhill from here. Today is stronger winds, and rain, at the moment not flyable.

Thursday: and the rest of the week is, at the moment, crap too. Windy or rainy, or both. There might be a brief ridge of high pressure around Thursday or so, in which case it might be flyable.

So, still in summer, and at the moment, it looks like two flyable days out of seven.

Monday was almost as we said, though the winds were stronger than forecast. Nevertheless, both PGs and hangies flew; hangies more or less all day, PGs at intervals. The wind - as forecast - didn't drop off in the evening. Usually it does, but not today, and the forecast was right about that. There was wave around. And it was thermic. Some PGs did go XC.

Tuesday: bang on west, sunny. Definitely ok for hangies. I think it will be top end for PGs, though ok for some. Unlike today, it should drop off in the evening.

Rest of the week: shit.

Today, Tuesday, was pretty much as forecast. Strong during the day, hang glidable all day, some PGs flew, some good XCs (not in the league yet), and dropping off early evening to let the rest of the PGs fly.

The rest of the week, in flying terms, is rubbish (mostly windy, some rain), but - there is a but - there is a ridge of high pressure going through sometime on Thursday. This will make it mostly dry and sunny. However, it is also likely to be windy. At the moment, it looks like it could be ok for hangies, too windy for PGs. I'm not wildly optimistic, but will keep an eye on it.

Thursday was flyable on the Mynd for hang gliders from the afternoon on, and it finally dropped off enough for PGs sometime after 7pm.

Friday is very wet and windy. Weekend probably blown out for everything.
