Week beginning Monday, 22nd July

Genrally, fairly windy, some showers. Hot too. Not brilliant, but could be some windows at times. If we're lucky. Not that optimistic though at the moment.

Monday: pretty windy. SW. Not really much chance. Maybe on the coast somewhere.

Tuesday: starts off relatively light, but winds picking up quite strong during the day. SSE/SE. I guess Corndon could be an option. Maybe the Gyrn early on.

Wednesday: a little lighter. SW. Clatter, certainly ok for hangies, maybe PG too, though probably not.

Thursday: SSE. Probably windy/gusty. Possible showers, thunderstorms.

Friday: south going west at some point. Showery, probably windy.

Weekend; west on Saturday, hang glidable, top end for PGs. Sunday lighter, changing direction, damp.

Tuesday probably on the windy side and also there is due to be a very strong low level temperature inversion for most if not all of the day, with a fair amount of wind shear with height (45 degrees or so). Wrekin looks best from point of view of the air, but not a good site when it's windy, especially the SE side which gets a lot of turbulence. Corndon is probably a safer bet though not as good for ridge soaring.

Thursday is pretty windy, too much for PG's everywhere I think - especially as near the fairly low inversion level this afternoon- -3000ft max it gets really windy above, and with a localised chance of cumins to over 30,000ft. So save the exercise in the heat for another day.

Friday, looks a bit better with lighter SW winds and lower temperature.

Saturday looks even better with NW winds and better air.

Sunday very variable with forecasts, between good and raining all day.

Friday is starting off SW, going W or NW by late afternoon, early evening, so could be a chance on the Mynd. Less chance of thunderstorms tomorrow.

Saturday is NW, NNW. I'm not sure of the strength, but there's obviously a lot of options. Llangollen certainly for the hangies. Maybe the Lawley; Long Mountain if top end for PGs. Lan Fawr perhaps. Probably too strong for the Wrekin.

Sunday: WNW at the moment, winds should be ok for both HG and PG, on the Mynd. Or, if NW, the Lawley/Llangollen. But at the moment, probably the Mynd. Could be a very good day.

The Mynd was working well today, Friday, from early evening. Clattter was also flyable earlier. Not sure about Camlo.

Saturday still NNW. Llangollen for hangies, Long Mountain for PGs. Maybe Sarn.

Sunday: WNW, great for hangies on the Mynd, probably top end for PGs. Thermic day.

For today the forecasts indicate that around here will likely be too close to the poor weather across Midlands and North East england. However very good conditions further west and south west. Winds NW and ok for hg and pg. Go to south Wales if you can and are a club member, alternatively 100 house or nearer us llandinam. This is to not only get the best thermic air but also avoid the chance of rain in the afternoon. For the long mynd, later on the light wind may turn Westerly enough to be good for ridge soaring and that may be a safe option for low airtime pilots.

Sunday looks blown out for paragliders at present and top end for hang gliders.

Saturday turned out pretty rubbish apart from down in Wessex area. Sunday however the winds look like being a bit lighter now, so the Mynd might be ok for PG's tomorrow - just check the webcams page. Alternatively head a bit further south, though the wind is more westerly down that way which makes the site choice slightly more limited than when NW. Malverns Worcestershire beacon or Frocester look possibilities, or Merthyr maybe for both ridge soaring and XC.
