Week beginning Monday, 20th May

Postby Geoffm » Sun May 19, 2019 8:26 pm

There should be quite a few flyable days this coming week, especially at the start, with some good ridge soaring and XC days.

Monday: NNW. Probably a soarable breeze, sunny, thermic. Sarn, Llangollen (where it could be OK for hangies too).

Tuesday: very similar to Monday, but with slightly stronger winds, possibly stronger thermals. Maybe Long Mountain will be ok too.

Wednesday: light winds again, thermic. Not exactly sure of the wind direction at the moment, different forecasts are giving totally different directions. My guess is that it will have some west in it.

Thursday: probably SW, too much south in it for the Mynd. Clatter locally. Winds starting to pick up though.

Friday: NW, stronger winds, some chance of showers.

Weekend: probably WSW/W. Possibly showery. Probably breezy.

Monday saw some flying at Long Mountain and Llangollen, but there were some monster clouds about and rain.

Tuesday, a pretty strong thermic day with the wind veering to the NW during the day, but possibly backing west again much later. There should be cumulus clouds though probably going blue later. Not an ideal beginners day until the evening, when I think it will go really nice, either on one of the NW sites or possibly the Mynd. Regarding the backing Westerly - that air may not reach the Mynd as there's a convergence line to the west of there, so LLandinam might be an option for some evening flying if not the normal NW sites. During the day there is a good chance that most sites other than Long Mountain may be blown out.

Elsewhere, Peaks look blown out, 100 house, Hay Bluff, Combe Gibbett, Westebury, Selsley good options, with Leckhampton an option for those going XC (difficult top and no bottom landing)

Wednesday - westerly and looks good for the Mynd

Update - don't go to Hay Bluff - the site is closed during the week for flying.

Lots of XCs today, including from our sites (Llandinam, Wrekin, Lawley), or sites close to us like Long Mountain. Wednesday/Thursday is the Mynd, and chances are at least on Wednesday there'll be plenty of people there to go XC. Possibly a bit cloudy in the morning, it should clear later.

Friday is back to NW. and a bit stronger, so probably Long Mountain. Some chance of showers.

Weekend is westerlies, gradually picking up. Again, some chance of showers.

There is temp airspace 4000 and above extending to 52 33 north 002 45 west, Wednesday 22nd 1310-1400 BST.
This could be an issue going over the back from the Mynd

Thursday, it might be a bit off to the south for much of the day but does look nicely soarable. If it is off, it is not forecast to be SW enough to make the likes of clatter or shepherds tump ideal. Camlo does have the bowl facing wsw though it is the shallowest part of the slope to soar. The air is due to detriorate later on but if anything come more west so better for ridg soaring.

Friday good too.

Saturday is another flyable westerly at the Mynd. Cloud, and wind, increasing throughout the day, and thermal activity reducing, but little chance of rain. Paraglidable much of the day, and hangglideable too. Having said that, there is a slight chance it could get too windy for PGs earlier than expected.

Sunday is much poorer, with stronger winds and more chance of rain.
