Week beginning Monday, 13th May

Postby Geoffm » Sun May 12, 2019 9:50 pm

Sorry, am doing this late, so a little brief.

Mostly, again, winds with easterly components this week. Most days warm, sunny and thermic, though it gets a bit cloudier towards the weekend.

Monday: light-ish, SSE. Options are Corndon, Wrekin, the Gyrn. All should work.

Tuesday: slightly stronger, ESE. Again, Corndon, Malverns.

Wednesday: as Tuesday!

Thursday: east, winds slightly stronger. Corndon would be a good options.

Friday: north a fair bit stronger. If it really is north, Long Mountain could be ok.

Weekend: getting cloudier, NNE.

Wednesday, roughly ESE winds in our area and looks good especially for ridge soaring, but its likely to be better later in the day as the very low inversion lifts. Late afternoon or the evening. Probably too much east in the wind for the wrekin. Pandy or malverns more reliable today for soaring. Corndon not great to soar in this direction but could be good for thermal chasers though not ideal for xc as may be really late on by the time the inversion is high enough to go anywhere.

Thursday looks like being good air but might be a bit windy for some pg pilots. East to ESE and fairly brisk wind all day.
After today conditions deteriorate but I'm not sure how much by but Friday looks windier than today slightly.

Saturday looks cloudy and dull, with a slight chance of showers. The biggest problem though is the very light winds, with no thermals unless the sun does come out. The direction is somewhere between NNW and NNE. If the former, could be on at Llangollen, which might be worth a try. Maybe Mam/Lords Seat in the Peaks. Not an epic day though.

Sunday looks like a bit better day. Probably NNW, slightly stronger, though not much. A bit sunnier. Llangollen. Maybe the Wrekin.

Forecasts are still pretty much exactly as Geoff stated Friday evening for both Saturday and Sunday, not much change though some forecasts are slightly more optimistic about there being some wind and less chance of rain. Might even be soarable at the Mynd on Sunday afternoon by one forecast I've seen.

Today looks moderately promising for ridge soaring and maybe some thermalling. Rain showers are likely to be a bigger problem, though many sites may miss them. It's still due to veer to the NNW direction during the day, and the weather stations are already showing a shift towards that.
