Week beginning Monday 28th January

Postby Dave Thomas » Sun Jan 27, 2019 11:59 am

Monday holds a slim chance, however it is likely to be too windy and westerly. Forecasts vary between NW for most forecasts but on the fresh side but if they are right probably ok for Long Mountain, however rasp has a kink in the wind direction showing more westerly but maybe too windy for PG's at the Mynd, just maybe HG's ok. Next chance after then seems to be the following Sunday.

I have a feeling that the slim chance I thought might be on today has improved to a half decent chance. Don't be misled by the current light westerly breeze on the Mynd, it is due to go NW as the air starts to mix and get stronger. Much later in the day before dark it may well go light and westerly again. Long Mountain or possibly Lawley look on. Nice air with some thermals to about 3000ft max. Further south the air is even better, so Selsley or Thames valley club site Liddington look on. Note on Long Mountain, unless it is at least NW or more NNW, it can be a bit difficult as a lot of the air runs along the hill from the west and kicks up going across the left hand gully and into the bowl. The perfect direction for the mountain is NNW, but it has the huge advantage of coping with windy conditions in a pretty safe manner, nothing in front and half a mile of field to get blown back onto, makes it No1 choice for me if windy.

Wednesday looks reasonably flyable at the Long Mynd, but most likely a long walk up as the roads get so much ice from the natural springs coming up along the Burway or running down in front of the gliding club onto the road.

Elsewhere, peak district looks like too low cloud, but down south and especially Devon having very good air with high base but possibly towering clouds. Maybe Merthyr or Frocester are options for PG's and the coast for HG's as probably too windy for PG's. The thermal strength for sea thermals is really excellent for the time of year.

Wednesday turned out really good for those that went out, soaring at the Wrekin, good thermic flying at the Mynd. Down south at Frocester saw really excellent potentially XC conditions with thermals in the afternoon strong enough for pilots to get to cloudbase and stay there for an hour or more. Rhossili saw HJG's flying, not sure how good the sea thermals were.
