Week beginning Monday, 31st December

Postby Geoffm » Sun Dec 30, 2018 6:42 pm

Not a bad week coming up. No rain at all forecast. Not horrendous winds. Nice weather. Some flyable days probably.

Monday: probably the breeziest day of the week. WSW. Should be ok on the Mynd, unless it goes too far south. Ok for hangies anyway - maybe for PGs too.

Tuesday: light westerlies. Paraglidable on the Mynd. Maybe a bit light for hangies.

Wednesday: very light easterlies. Everywhere looks really light, even the Peaks. Maybe the Glydders in Snowdonia?

Thursday: here it is very light SW, and same in the Peaks, though that would probably be a better option.

Friday: back to west, probably soarable on the Mynd for PGs.

Weekend: lightish, between NW and SW.

Hangies - well, at least one - did fly on the Mynd on Monday. Not sure if anything happened there on Tuesday. At the moment, most of the rest of the week looks really light around here, though picking up a little on Saturday when it's westerly, and could just be strong enough for the Mynd for PGs. But from Friday onwards the Peaks is a much better option, at Bradwell or Shining Tor.

Wednesday, sunny with a light breeze, currently mostly NE or E by the look of our weather stations, though further east of our area it's a northerly and stronger wind. So in our area, lob off a big hill for a fly down maybe, but in the peaks it might be ridge soarable I think, possibly also Leckhampton or Blorenge, though that's marginal too.

Peaks was flyable and soarable from site reports. Here, I think it was too light - certainly wasn't any wind on top of the Wrekin.

Friday around here looks like being clear but with no wind. Peak district looks more promising. Saturday onwards for a few days around here looks more westerly and maybe soarable, but the lapse rate charts indicate it's likely to be clagged in.

Friday still showing no wind at all here, but the peaks could even be a bit on the windy side. However lapse charts for peaks suggest could be clagged in if cloud develops. There's some webcams up that way, so if they are looking good, it's the only place to go today, or maybe Derbyshire dales - wind due to be westerly to WNW in those areas.

Sunday might be a bit like Saturday, westerly and with a significant temperature inversion and possibly clagged in - but maybe not. Lots of people flew at the Mynd yesterday, but I had no internet connectivity so couldn't look at the weather.

Today there is due to be a change in wind direction and speed with height - gets windier then lighter as the direction veers to the north. It's lighter winds further west, so if it does get a bit windy on the mynd then some of our other sites may work out ok. Over the last couple of weeks, the lapse rate charts have mostly indicated low to ground level cloud and it seems like luck whether that happens to be the case or not, I haven't really been able to say with certainty either way.
