Week beginnning Monday 24th September

Postby Dave Thomas » Sun Sep 23, 2018 7:01 pm

Looks probably flyable pretty well all week, but from different sites, but as it's been changing a lot I'll leave the rest of the week to suggest options as we get closer.

Monday looks good, but varying a lot over our area - windier to the east a bit. During the morning probably NW and a decent breeze, but gradually decreasing especially in Wales part of our area. some forecasts suggest WNW going round to North, but other say other things as it gets really light. Cloudbase best in mid Wales over Cambrians. For a westerly set of sites I'd say Llangollen or Llandinam. for a bit further east the Wrekin. Having said that some forecasts give light westerly by mid day so the mynd mynd come on. Elswewhere local-ish then 100 house Built Wells sites look good and if there's enough wind then Leckhampton.

Same as it looked last night, but with more of a chance of it being on at the Long Mynd, certainly later on this morning, but it might end up a bit off to the north. The other options mentioned look a better bet though.

The windsock shows on at the Mynd, but reports from Roy Dade show it to be a long way off once in the air - you can tell by watching the webcams and the clouds. Cracking looking sky though. As the thermals mix the air the wind will tend to veer into more of a match with the upper winds. It's due to reduce in speed during the day as well, so unless you fly the Mynd and get right up and away XC it's not looking promising there - better elsewhere as previously indicated I still think.

Tuesday looks fairly windy around here, with cloudbase only about 2500ft or so and SSW to SW direction. Not sure whether our SW sites will be launchable for PG's and it gradually gets windier slightly during the day. Should be ok for HG soaring though.

Wednesday has everywhere afected by a low level temperature inversion in the high pressure which will kill thermals above about 2000 ft, but the sun and wind will make it punchy and turbulent below. Probably blown out until the afternoon anyway. Winds wsw but i think will come onto the mynd late on and as the wind drops to a nice speed. Check the webcams and weather stations for some after work soaring.

Cracking stuff - webcams show people soaring the Mynd.

Tomorrow looking possible too.

Thursday. Not forcast to be a good thermallung day but there should be a useable soaring period. Forecasts disagree over the wind speed a bit but agree on direction, starting off sw to wsw and around lunchtime coming west and then later on going lighter and more NW. So options will be an early start at clatter, camlo, shepherds tump or a slightly later one at the mynd or if its a bit windy at the mynd then go up the lawley or wrekin for the early evening. Plenty of options just depends on your timing. For all options Camlo takes the most variations.

Friday I'm not entirely sure about yet as a cold front is due to pass through but not clear exactly when, but probably will be an unusual post frontal NE direction and thermic.
Saturday back on the mynd.

Thursday was on the Mynd all day. Most of the time, too windy for PGs, but the hangies were flying all day. No massive height - a thousand or so ATO. There were some thermals, but trashed by the wind. In the evening it dropped off, and in spite of the forecast stayed westerly, and PGs flew.

Friday, NNE to NE and too windy in most places, other than here and the Peak district. The wind here maybe a bit too much early on but is due to reduce a little during the day (on some forecasts only). The cold front was supposed to have completely passed through by now, but the satellite images show it's not quite done that yet. RASP says it's going to be great thermic and XC day, and would be a good soarable day other than the fact that Corndon is not a place to soar in a NE direction - the peak district has far better options I think for that.

Friday was soarable in the peaks by the look of it, and a few of the top XC guys flew down to our patch. Haven't heard what happened at Corndon though, flying was done in south wales too.

Saturday should be somewhere between SW and W - probably on at the Mynd at times, but not particularly strong. More wind a bit further north, so Penycloduiau west maybe a more consistent option. Camlo has a nice mostly west face as well, but rather shallow in the SW direction. Better air further south but virtually no wind and not thermic enough for most to overcome the difficulties that brings.

Peny west is rarely flown - people tend to go to Moel Accre or Moel Famau.

thank you for that info, I've never been to either of those north wales sites to be able to advise on them, sounds like options for today then.

Saturday has RASP giving pretty low windspeeds, but other forecasts say it will be windier and better suited to ridge soaring and all agree roughly on the wind gradually coming round a bit more to the west as the day progresses. Nice and sunny though so a pleasant day out wherever you go. Clatter, Shepherds tump early on then maybe back to the Mynd as it comes more west (Shepherds Tump does have a westerly facing bowl and is a lovely grassy launch area).

Sunday has forecasts saying not very windy first thing and west then veering North West and getting stronger, to a speed that only Long Mountain can cope with for PG's. However it's already windier than forecast and west on the Mynd, so it might end up being blown out. If not it should be a good ridge soaring day again.

It never did go NW. It stated w or wnw all day. Too strong for pgs, the hangies there flew all day, though at times the ridge was affected by wave suppression, so they didn't always get as much height as you would expect given the wind strength. But easily soarable, nevertheless.
