This is where you’ll find up to date information about our sites and activities. As well as the site guide and a huge range of other information, you can actively contribute by posting in the discussion forum – only LMSC members can post, but anyone can read it.

Only LMSC members are able to login – do so by using the link on the left.

Visiting pilots

Visiting pilots are very welcome to fly most of the Long Mynd sites. All pilots flying our sites must be British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA) members (or members of an equivalent foreign organisation) as this includes insurance to cover injuries to other pilots or damage to property. Before flying, please read our sites guide and speak to a committee member, club coach or experienced local pilot about bottom landings, local conditions, airspace, etc. You can find details of our club coaches on the coaching pages. Why not join the LMSC if you fly our sites regularly?

Please note: if you are not an LMSC member, there is a £3 per day fee for flying the Long Mynd at weekends and bank holidays. You can pay the fee online by clicking here. After paying site management costs, the rest of this fee goes to the air ambulance.

  • History of hang gliding Posted on behalf of Mark Woodhams. If you can help, please email Mark directly at markandsteff@gmail.com - don't reply to this message because he doesn't use Facebook. I am writing a book about the history of hang gliding and need a photo – mugshot and/or flying shot) of Alvin Russell, founder member of the Long Mynd Hang Gliding Club. Alvin was very important to the development of the sport in the UK. Tragically, he was killed flying a Moonraker prototype in Ireland. He was a great friend of Graham Driscoll and Brian Milton (who I have already contacted). Reasonably high resolution scans would be fine (colour or black and white), or, if I can borrow the photo, I’ll scan it and promise to return it quickly.   • Posted for the Malverns Club: Dear Pilots I am sure many of you will know that Pinnacle Hill, Malvern (often known as “Kettle Sings”, after the café near the car park) is one of the most popular flying sites in southern England when the winds are easterly. This leads to large numbers of pilots congregating here on good days. You may also know that we have had difficulties in the past with our bottom landing field – it has changed at least three times in recent years as landowners have changed their minds about giving permission. We currently have an informal arrangement with the landowner of the present landing field that we can use it as long as we donate at least £400 each year to the West Midlands Air Ambulance (a charity close to all our hearts, for obvious reasons). He can of course change his mind at any time and withdraw permission for us to use the field. This could well lead to the effective closure of the site, as no other suitable bottom landing options are currently available. Over the last couple of years, a few thoughtless pilots seem to have been doing their best to make that happen. The people who live in the large house right next to the landing field (to the north) have been thoroughly alienated by – · pilots parking on their private drive several times, · pilots pushing through the hedge and fence to exit the landing field via the neighbours’ private property (rather than using the stile and path at the north east corner as set out in the site guide), and · (on one occasion) urinating into the fence right opposite their house in full view. They have said that they are considering trying to get our permission to land there withdrawn. We have done our best to smooth things over, but could I ask you all please to be on your best behaviour when using the Kettle Sings landing field, and not to do anything to alienate the neighbours further. One other request, please – we collect the Air Ambulance money through a page on JustGiving at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Malvern-HangGlidingClub2. At the time of writing, apart from the donation of the club’s own Christmas raffle proceeds, there have been just 12 donations, totalling £281. There have been days this year when there have been over 50 pilots on the hill, so clearly people need a reminder. Could you please have a think about how much you value the Air Ambulance and how much you like flying at the Malverns, then go to the JustGiving page (via our website, if you wish, at http://www.malvern-hang.org.uk/) to make a donation? You might also like to review the site guide and rules on our website, which have recently been updated. Thanks for helping us keep this fantastic site open. Please respect the “private property” signs at the end of the drive to the house and do not wander up the drive – even by a couple of yards - just because it is still a long way from the house and gives a good view of your friends coming into the landing field. It’s private property, with an extremely irritated owner who might just be able to get the landing field closed to us. Would you want to be the individual who causes that to happen?

Long Mountain

Many LMSC pilots also fly Long Mountain. This is not an LMSC site, but it is within our area. There is a £5 site fee for flying here. Pay this to beyondextreme@hotmail.com using PayPal.

Contribute to our local air ambulance at Midlands Air Ambulance. Here is their Justgiving page, where you can easily make donations. Alternatively, you can donate via the LMSC when you join or renew as an LMSC member.

Want to learn to fly?

We are a club of qualified pilots and do not train people wanting to learn to fly. However, there are local schools who will be happy to teach you to fly, or give you tandem lessons. Please see our Schools page for more details.

Long Mynd webcams and weather station

There are two webcams at the Mynd,  courtesy of the Midland Gliding Club. For both, time is displayed in GMT, wind speed in knots. So to get the actual time, in summer, add one hour to the displayed time!
