First XC from Mynd
Posted by Stephen Taylor at 2010-05-15 19:22

Got my first XC of the year today, my first from Long Mynd and only my second XC. Got to the mynd, along with about 70 others to find light winds but good direction. Had a 20 min flight, stay up in a thermal, bottom / slope land if you didn't. Then had to wait as a big black CU passed over. We were all waiting for the wind to pick up again and when it did within 5 mins about many PGs had launched. I took of straight into good lift and decided to stay with it. Got to 3847 ft ASL, and landed out by Middlehope (SO 49630,87780) -with 5 others nearby - a straight line distance of about 10.2KM.

Excellent, well done Stephen, and all the others who did their first XCs today.

Well done Stephen. Not best new PG pilot for nothing!

A quick well done and special mention to Luke Evans who did his first ever XC and Mick Bird-Jones who did his best ever XC.

What did others do?

Hi Judith

A couple of the guys in our group got to Clee Hill from Black Knoll, one who is only just post CP, that said he has flown sailplanes for a few years. I managed to get to cloudbase before going to get them. Luckily I caught my climb out on my video camera so have posted it on Youtube.

Tomorrow I'll not be holding the car keys!
