Recommended GPS

As a once-techie type, but now far too lazy and disinterested to faff about altering registry files and all that malarkey does anybody have a suggestion for a GPS that is both easily useable in flight and will upload tracklogs without all the aforementioned faff?

I have a Garmin GPSmap76 and I cannot, for the life of me, get it to talk to my PC. I need plug'n'play!

Hi Steve,

that's what both Judith and I have. We haven't had any problems with it. We use GpsDump to download the tracklogs. Our connection lead has an RS232 connector. You shouldn't have to mess about with the registry at all.

Depending on how urgent this is - i.e can you wait till we're back in early April - I could show you our setup, and also check that the lead you're using is OK. Would be cheaper to buy a new lead (if it is faulty) than a new GPS!

Sounds good. I'm away until then anyway. See you on the hill!

Steve,
I asked this question last summer, and as a result ended up with a 76CS shich seems to be the most popular, although somewhat old now.
If you want to borrow my lead, I'll post it to you, you can then try it & send it back. otherwise you can pick up a new one for £9.50 on Ebay. Type in "GPS data cable" this is where I got mine from, far better than £25-£30 elsewhere.

That's very kind, thanks, Jason. I have a lead with RS232 connector, so when I get back from hols I'll have a play again.

If I'm honest, my record with any form of interface between handheld devices and PCs is abysmal - the number of times in the past I have wasted whole days reformatting hard discs and reloading all my software is horrific - so these days I tend to play it safe. That's why I was asking if I could just throw money at the problem and buy another GPS!!

I may attempt to do what I need on one of my older laptops; I can't afford to lose stuff from my work machine. So, I'll have a play, then beg for help when I get stuck, as I surely will!

Thanks all!

Steve, if your using vista then Garmin dont have a driver for the usb converter (I think?) .I tried connecting to a laptop with vista, no success.
(I don't know if this is relevant I know nothing about computers :-))

I've got home pc and laptop both with Vista, and had no problems connecting Garmin 76 CSX using USB cable. I tried it with both GpsDump and GiPSy Flight Manager on laptop and GiPSy on home pc. No drivers to install in my case...
Perhaps try first on someone elses computer with their cable. I usually have my laptop on the hill, so maybe one day on the Mynd...
