Andrew, the sport is self-governing there was no handover from the CAA to the BHPA, they stepped in! You are not a qualified pilot, you hold a BHPA CP/P/AP rating that is not worth the paper it is written on (albeit expensively written). Other coutries accept this as valid, this however is a gentlemans agreement.

I am self-governing myself as the CAA have told us to.. I don't take this task lightly. The only people breaking laws are as I have said before the people perpetuating and profiting from this BHPA myth.

Finally dave where did these profits come from, our insurance premiums perhaps? I won't mention names but someone told me today that the BHPA pay AIB £450,000 a year now (nearly 70%) of the subs. Nice work if you can get it.

It's pretty obvious that an insurance company makes its profits out of the premiums it receives I think !! I bet Sportscover Direct haven't set up a charity from their profits. Dunno what the £450,000 you're referring to is about.

MrB I bet you are right that Sports Cover Direct haven't set-up a charity (was this a charitable contribution or a bind?). Hmmm!

qualified ? What for ?

Hi Andrew ..
you wrote : " you lose your current CP, P or AP ratings so are technicaly un qualified "

Andrew what exactly are you qualified for if you have a piece of paper from the BHPA or anyone else that gives out these unrecognised qualifications in the first place ?

I repeat " to fly paragliders in the UK ... YOU NEED NO QUALIFICATION !!
is that so difficult to grasp ? IT IS A TOTALLY UNREGULATED PASTIME....The same as toboggoning down a snow-covered hill is !!!!

A landowner or club could insist on insurance or schooling to ride the toboggan , but make no mistake your new toboggan "licence" would be worthless..

I believe the committee should make their stance on insurance clear to all...Are they beholding to the BHPA or not ?
If so then it's bordering on illegality..
If not then make it clear that 2 million 3rd party cover is all thats required..

Never mind all the rants ... Just be concise and fair.

Hello John,

Ok, you are now splitting hairs over the qualified statement bit. From a BHPA stand point new pilots need to gain their CP ‘qualification/certification/approval/worthless bit of paper’ to be covered by the BHPA 3rd party insurance and fly club sites. I believe this point is quite clear and most pilots who read this thread will probably understand what is meant.

I am so glad I had the 3rd party insurance when doing a spot of DIY panel beating to Kens motor. Without it I would probably be nearly £4000 out of pocket!

It will be very interesting as to how this works out?

No hairs have been split, colored or altered in anyway. John has made this very clear. You are talking about the BHPA insurance as though it is somehow better, gilt edged and worth more than mine. Is this now a contest of whos got the better insurance policy ?

On a lighter note Thousand Island Dressing, commonly used on prawn cocktail, can be made by mixing 80% salad cream with 20% tomato ketchup.

Enjoy!

To be fair to Tom, immediately after he made the lalala posting above, he apologised, and said "My last contribution was a tad silly". We all post things we think better of - unfortunately, on this forum at the moment, we can't take them back. Let's try and keep the discussion sensible and contructive - not least because everyone can read it, not just LMSC members!
