The Gateway Centre, Shrewsbury. December 4th 10.30am – 9.30pm. Tickets are £10 in advance (£12.50 on the door)
During the long dark winter months most of us pilots will resign ourselves to laying our gliders down into hibernation. Those with a ‘die hard’ attitude will either wait it out on the hill through snow and wind or travel to the far flung corners of this planet. All waiting / searching of those most magical of moments - air time. For others, winter flying exists mainly in our heads, by reliving successes / failures of the past year and dreaming of adventures in the next. During these months we will need our senses reviving, our neurons sharpening. We will need to be reminded how it feels when we’re doing what we love so much. We will need to be inspired.
This December sees the first, of what we hope might become an bi-annual event celebrating free flying. We are planning a day of films and speakers which extol the varied aspects of this sport.
The programme - we will try our best to keep to these times
11 am, Film - Path of the condor - Three years in the making Christian Holler’s spectacular new 60-minute film, The Path of the Condor, follows a paraglider pilot and an ornithologist as they set out to share what they each know about the condor and its habitat. Set in Patagonia the stars of the films are the birds and the wild landscape. Local paragliding instructor Martin Vallmitjana sets off to see if he can follow the birds as they fly complex patterns of wave around the valleys, while ornithologist Lorenzo Sympson heads for the high mountains and condor ‘flight school’ – where the young learn to fly in flocks of up to 50 birds. The result is spectacular – footage of the birds in flight is incredible and we learn an awful lot about how they fly, breed, and live. Along the way we get some good flying scenes, soaring above the wilderness of northern Patagonia.
12.20pm, - Pimple Queens Feature - This is what they say about themselves… A small clan of Clangers on a secret quest for enlightenment escape the earth,,,,, id tell you all about it but it wouldn’t fit inside your head. love love love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx For those that don’t know who, or what, they are it is probably best summed up as a group of bad lads from the North do their funky paragliding thang.
1.10pm, Talk - Air Ambulance Paramedic An insight into what they do and how we can help in an incident.
1.50pm, Film - Birdman of the karakorum - What’s it really like to fly at 7,000 m, crossing frozen mountains, soaring massive rock walls and forging new cross country routes on a paraglider in the Himalayas? To find out, adventure filmmaker Alun Hughes joins high altitude paragliding star John Silvester on a tandem paraglider and goes ‘col busting’ in the Karakoram. This gripping adventure film documents not only an extraordinary pilot and the cutting edge of high altitude Himalayan paragliding, it also introduces a growing subculture of paragliding that has never been explored before. The Birdman of the Karakoram won the prize for human adventure at the 2009 Coupe Icare film festival in St Hilaire, France.
3.20pm, Film - Adrenaline and Turbulence - Adrenaline and Turbulence is much more than just a paragliding acro film. Shot in some of the best flying sites in the world this is an action film, an educational tool, a road movie and a story of personal triumph. Stumbling out of the backstreets of Budapest as schoolboys, Gábor Kézi and Pál Takáts fall in love with paragliding acrobatics and set off with the dream of becoming professional acro pilots. Heading to Spain and the secret training site of the Rodriguez brothers, the pair soon learn the necessary skills to climb to the highest step of the acro ladder. Candid, in depth, informative, inspiring and beautifully produced by Andras Kollman, Adrenaline and Turbulence is a stunning tribute to where determination and self-belief can take you. Adrenaline and Turbulence was the winner of the Prix D’Or at 2009 Coupe Icare film festival and the Grand Prize at the Spirit of Aviation International film festival in Budapest also the film won TEMPS D’AVENTURA (Adventure Time) award at Torello Mountain Film Festival
4.30, Talk - Cross Country’s Review of the Year – Ed Ewing From flying giant wave in Australia to speed flying in the Himalaya, Cross Country magazine’s editor Ed Ewing presents his pick of the year. The top 10 stories from the international free flight world that have been the most important, amazing, outrageous or just downright quirky over the last 12 months. See beyond the headlines and get the real story from behind the editor’s chair. ed will also present the photography competition prizes.
6.00pm, Film - Playgravity2, The other side - The 28th edition of the International Free-Flying-Films Festival of St Hilaire took place in September at the Coupe Icare, where 8 films were awarded by the jury and the public. The film “Play Gravity II - the other side”, took the Gold Icare and was the favorite for the public. Playgravity II - the other side grants a deep insight into the fascinating world of extreme athletes and is able to charm the spectator with impressive images and athletic state of the art action - some of it never been seen before. Inspired, touched and fueled by the loss of our beloved Mathias (see Playgravity I - the movie), Olympic medalists, world champions and young prodigies open up and talk about their feelings, fears and beliefs. Our journey leads us from Alaska to Hawaii, from Spain to Indonesia and other places. Magnificent images paired with the unusually straight and unmasked statements of extraordinarily
7.30, Talk - Spiralling the Steppes – Steve Nash & Gareth Aston A vol biv expedition across Mongolia the ‘land of the blue sky’. Three times the size of France with a population a thirtieth that of Britain, a country with unparalleled open spaces, skies so vast, it is said by some you can see the curvature of the earth. This, matched with some of the most extreme weather on the planet make it a truly awesome destination. At the heart of the trip is the traverse of the Khangai Nuruu mountain range situated in the centre of Mongolia. The goal to cross totally unsupported, with the pilots carrying all they need to fly and survive. Steve and Gareth are both well known UK pilots, the mountains of Snowdonia are their ‘home sites’ and they have both flown extensively throughout the world. Steve is also the only Brit to be selected for the Red Bull X Alps 2011.
