Tasks

This is a series of short tasks which you can do to help your develop your general flying and XC skills. The idea behind these tasks is to encourage low airtime pilots to take the next step and fly XC, learning how to fly away from the ridge whilst using a GPS receiver and flying to a waypoint or set of waypoints as you would do in a competition.

You should also look at the following page on the coaching section of the site: Preparing for your first XC

All the following tasks are from the Long Mynd take off at SO 404 918 so prefix these co-ordinates as the start.

1. Pole Cottage

SO 404 936 (1.8km)

At the North end of the Mynd, just before the modeller’s bowl (don’t fly into the bowl, you might get hit by a model!). Fly there, and back to launch, 3.6km in total.

2. Black Knoll

SO 393 887 (3.31km)

South end of the Mynd. In the right conditions, can be relatively easy, but also can be a quite challenging flight!

3. The Crown at Wentnor out & return.

SO 384 928 (4.5km)

Doing short out and returns encourages people to take off in lighter winds, always good practise, especially on a paraglider where slope landing if you don’t get up is an easy option.

4. Pole Cottage to Black Knoll

SO 404 936 to SO 393 887 (5.1km)

Do it a couple of times, and you’ve done your first 10k+ XC!

5. Off to the south

Fly to the south end of the Mynd, and just keep on going.… find a suitable field to land out in (no livestock, no power lines, no trees).
